Halloween brings a whole new energy to the evening — doorbells, dramatic hats, tiny superheroes at the door. For some animals, this is the best night of the year. For others, it calls for a quiet room and an early bedtime.

The key is paying attention to what your individual animal enjoys. Some dogs live for the parade of visitors and would happily sit on the porch all night greeting trick-or-treaters. Cats may observe from a safe distance with great dignity. And others, regardless of species, would simply prefer the calm.

A few things worth keeping in mind:

  • If your pet is social, let them enjoy it — just keep candy, wrappers, and tempting decorations safely out of reach.
  • For animals who get overstimulated, a quiet back room with their bed and a favorite toy can make the evening much easier.
  • Double-check that collars and ID tags are secure just in case they slip out an open door.
  • Watch your animal’s cues. A wagging tail at the door means something different than pacing or retreating to a corner.

There’s no one-size-fits-all Halloween for pets, and that’s perfectly fine. Follow their lead and enjoy the night. Happy Halloween from all of us at HTA!
