Years ago, I was teaching a class when I noticed a student struggling to relax. Her shoulders were tight, her breathing shallow, her mind clearly racing through everything waiting for her at home. Beside her, her dog mirrored that same energy and was reluctant to settle into the present moment.

I gently invited her to pause. To soften. To let go of the day’s worries, just for a moment. As she settled into her own calm, something remarkable happened. Her dog let out a long sigh, curled up at her feet, and finally rested.

I have seen this again and again, in classrooms and in private sessions. Our animals take their cues from us. When we carry tension, they feel it. When we find our own steadiness, we give them permission to feel safe too.

So this September, be gentle with yourself. Your calm is a gift, not only to you, but to the animals who love you and look to you for reassurance.

Take a breath. Find your center. And watch how your quiet presence becomes theirs.
